State of Matter: Kika Jonsson and Ivo Gretener
Opening: September 11, 7-10 pm
Exhibition: September 11- 20, 2015

“The atom is the fundamental structure of matter: All things are made of atoms – little particles that move around in perpetual motion, attracting each other when they are a little distance apart, but repelling upon being squeezed into one another.” Richard Feynman

Scientifically separated into categories on an atomic level, what is the actual state of matter? In their exhibition, artists Kika Jonsson and Ivo Gretener examine the materials on our planet and how movement and modification affects them. Material objects have malleable lives, where a picture can become a symbol, or the remnants from a terrorist attack can be recycled into a battleship. The line between original intent and actual use is blurred.

Kika Jonsson (b. USA, 1979) studied at California College of the Arts and has been based in Berlin since 2010. She works in detailed, large scale graphite drawings that manipulate found images. Her work examines the inherently political nature of the physical landscape, and manifests a fascination with real and imagined borders.

Ivo Gretener (b. Switzerland, 1978) has been based in Berlin since 2008. His work focuses on representation, symbol appropriation and the nature of materials. He works primarily in sculpture and installation.
